Brief description of DH and its uses and benefits

Doubled Haploid (DH) technology enables development of completely homozygous inbred lines with in two cycles compared to six to eight cycles in conventional inbred lines development method of recurrent selfing. DH lines in maize breeding programs enhance the breeding efficiency and increases the genetic gains per unit time. Use of DH lines also results in simplified logistics and may reduce the costs involved in inbreeding. Use of DH lines also increases the selection gain in maize breeding programs as the DH process releases the entire genetic variance in the breeding populations. DH lines used in combination with molecular marker technologies offers higher selection intensity and efficient target gene fixation by reducing the sample sizes required to identify homozygotes. DH technology also aids in improving the germplasm by eliminating the deleterious alleles from the genepool. In research, DH lines are a valuable tool in functional genomics, marker trait association studies and marker-based gene introgressions.
